Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica. It is believed that Captain William Bligh, of the H.M.S. Bounty carried the fruit from the tropical West Africa (possibly Guinea) to Jamaica in 1793. Its name is derived from the West African Akye fufo. It is extremely popular in one of Jamaica's national dishes, "saltfish and ackee."
